Finally, after months of , this month I saw a Clearblue smiley face on my ovulation kit! This was the cause for much excitement, as it could mean ovulation is finally here.
However, of course it’s not that simple.
For the first time this cycle, I have begun using the new Clearblue Dual Hormone Ovulation Testing Kit Indicator Signpost Notice Help Stick. This new span dangled kit alleges to:
“Typically identify 4 fertile days, twice as many as any other ovulation test, so increases your window of opportunity to get pregnant.”
Sounds good right? DOUBLE THE CHANCES.
The way the kit works is slightly different from the normal ovulation kits I had been using (and decided recently to stop using due to the constant disappointment). Rather than just measuring luteinising hormone (LH), these new kits measure both oestrogen and LH:
So I should expect two days of flashy smiley face, two days of steady smiley face, and then a baby. As this was our last attempt with Clomid prior to the laparoscopy of doom, I figured these kits were worth a try.
However, the brief excitement at my flashy, smiling, digital breakthrough was swiftly followed by cautionary reading. Alas, certain medical conditions and medications can give misleading results. For example, if:
This last point was of particular interest to me, as I’m now on 150mg of clomiphene citrate (Clomid). So basically, before I could really get excited I needed to wait for the Peak Fertility days, with a steady smiley face – no flashing.
And this should occur two days later, right?
Wrong.
I am now on day 4 of flashy smiley face, and I am beginning to get the same feeling as when seeing the old …though slightly sweeter I suppose.
I have had a little lookey on the internet, and there are others who’ve had a similar problem (warning – forum abbreviation overload! OPK = ovulation prediction kit, as my best guess). It would seem that these new kits are not as fantastic as they make out to be.
One explaination is that the drugs are interferring. The other is that the kit is picking up the oestrogen surge early, which is why it’s lasting a few days. Some people on that forum are testing twice a day (££££!), and seeing their steady smiley in the afternoon, so there is also a chance I could be missing mine, passing straight on through and then measuring the high oestrogen in the days after the LH peak.
No one knows.
I have a blood test next Tuesday to check progesterone levels again. But I am also losing confidence in this method for testing ovulation, after speaking with a French gynaecologist yesterday who informed me they don’t do this blood test in France, due to its unreliability. She recommended I get scanned every day around ovulation to monitor progress/catch the egg release.
Hmmmm.
There are so many approaches, and variables. It makes my scientific mind ache. Even with the most advanced technology, it feels like 90% guess work. All we can do is make love and hope.
Some days, one is easier than the other.
Oh lordy Laura!
Although I do love the implication that you get more Magically Fertile Days when you use THIS magical kit!
I had a miscarriage 6 months ago and after finally getting my period on the right day, I started using this test and I have followed the instructions 100% and so far day 1 blank, day 2, 3 and 4 flashing smiley. I am not on any medication or anything listed on the list that you mentioned (expect perhaps pregnant and not know yet hopefully) as my sister did say she had a period while pregnant right at the beginning and my last one just before I did the test was a little unusual, I will let you all know in 4 weeks time
Ok just to update you all from my last comment. I had 6 days of a flashing smiley and on the 7th I had the solid smiley. That worked out as 18 days of my last period I ovulate which is normal as I am every 31 days. I also used this website that helped me work out my conception days: http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/document.aspx?ContentTypeID=41&ContentID=OvulationCalc
Using this website made it less stressful when it came trying to get the solid smiley and I could worry less. I will have to keep you updated though as so far I am 2 days late! :D
New update: after being 4 days late I came on my period before I had the chance to buy a test. On the plus side I know what to expect with the ovulation test kit.
Hi I got a smiley face on clear blue ovulation test now 3 days later I have faint line on pregnancy test. My boobs r soo sore. Surely its to early to be pregnant?????
Hi. I’ve been using this test for 3 months. First month no solid but after 2 negative a lot of flashing faces came. I phoned the helpline thinking I may have been using it wrong. They told me that I must have missed my peak and to stop testing. They also told me to start using it. Straight after my last period. 2nd month of using it worked perfect. 4 days flashing and then I got my solid face. Unfortunately I didn’t fall pregnant. I am now on month 3 and so far 18 days flashing faces. I don’t know what to do, might even try something else. I was using cheap ones but the lines were hard to read as they were always faint.
